Farmhouse Wall Restoration, North Wootton

Mendip Stonemasons restored a crumbling farmhouse wall at North Wootten, Somerset, which had been weakened over time by vibrations from tractor traffic. Using a combination of salvaged and locally sourced stone, we rebuilt the affected sections, repointed the surrounding masonry, and finished with a traditional flaunch to ensure strength, durability, and a visually appealing, heritage-sensitive result.

Goals & Requirements

Restore structural stability to the wall

Our goal was to rebuild the weakened sections using a combination of salvaged and local stone, ensuring the wall could withstand ongoing vibrations from tractor traffic. The work also aimed to maintain the traditional farmhouse aesthetic and integrate seamlessly with the existing masonry.

By repointing surrounding areas and finishing with a traditional flaunch, we strengthened the wall against future wear and preserved its heritage character.

Project Challenges

Deterioration and vibration damage

Years of tractor traffic over the nearby cattle grate had loosened and crumbled the stones, making careful removal and rebuilding essential to prevent further collapse.

Combining salvaged stone with locally sourced material required careful selection and placement to maintain structural integrity while preserving the original farmhouse appearance.
