Gate Pillar Restoration, Wells
At St. Andrews Street beside Wells Cathedral, Mendip Stonemasons were tasked with repairing a gate pillar that had been struck by a vehicle, leaving it both damaged and structurally misaligned. Through careful assessment and precise handling, we realigned and stabilised the pillar, repaired the stonework, and restored the function of the adjoining gate, all while preserving the historic character of the site.
Goals & Requirements
Restore structural stability to the gate pillar
The main goal was to realign and secure the displaced stones to make the pillar safe and structurally sound. Achieving this also ensured the adjoining wooden gate could function correctly.
Preserve the historic character
All repairs were carried out using appropriate mortar and careful techniques to maintain the original appearance of the pillar. This approach respected the heritage of the structure while providing a long-lasting repair.

They were quick to respond and fixed the damage the next day! They removed the excess stone and were very careful to ensure that the repaired wall was fitted with an exact likeness to the old stone. I would highly recommend them. matthew handTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Project Challenges
Dislodged and partially damaged pillar
The top half had been knocked out of place, creating an unsafe structure that needed careful handling to avoid further damage. The adjoining gate was also ineffective, adding complexity to the restoration.
Previous repairs complicating restoration
The upper section had been previously rebedded in cement and possibly dowelled with stainless steel, making traditional dismantling risky. We had to carefully lift and reset the section as a whole to protect both new and existing masonry.
Working with delicate, historic masonry:
The stone required precise handling to avoid cracking or damaging the surrounding structure. Every movement and repair was carefully planned to maintain the integrity and visual continuity of the original pillar.
