Stone Repairs & Conservation

Our repairs and conservation services focus on preserving stonework and protecting it from further damage. We often replace individual stones that have cracked or delaminated, preventing water ingress that can worsen over time, especially in winter when freezing can cause additional stress.

Where full replacement isn’t necessary, we carry out precise mortar repairs using carefully mixed sand and stone dust to match the original material. Built up in layers and, when needed, supported with armatures, our mortar repairs can replicate any stone surface seamlessly. Pointing is another crucial element of conservation: maintaining well-filled joints prevents water penetration and helps ensure the building remains structurally sound and visually authentic for generations to come.

Over time, stone naturally weathers and may require repair to maintain both its appearance and structural integrity. This often involves cutting out damaged sections and replacing them, or carrying out careful mortar repairs using lime and stone dust to match the original material.

These repairs help preserve the stone for many more years, protecting it from further weather-related damage. Typically, work is undertaken when deterioration becomes visible or when water ingress starts to affect the structure. Our approach ensures that repairs are sympathetic to the original stone while maintaining durability and authenticity.

Pointing is a vital part of a stone wall’s structure, designed to protect the masonry while being intentionally weaker than the stone itself. Over time, pointing naturally deteriorates, especially during winter when frost causes water to freeze and expand, leading to cracks and damage. Using inappropriate materials, such as cement, can exacerbate problems by preventing the wall from breathing, often requiring full removal and replacement to restore the wall to its original condition.

We carefully match the original pointing by analysing a sample of the existing material and testing different mixtures. Using a combination of small particle sand, medium sharp sand, stone dust, and lime, we create a series of trial mixes to find the perfect balance of strength, flexibility, and minimal shrinkage. This ensures the repaired pointing protects the wall, maintains its aesthetic, and allows the structure to move naturally over time.

There are several techniques we use to clean and restore stone, depending on the finish desired. For a gentle refresh that preserves the character of the stone, we use hand tools such as churn brushes or wire brushes with water. For a more thorough restoration, we can employ a Thermatech DOFF system which is a high-temperature steam cleaning method that removes dirt and biological growth, though sometimes a gentler approach is preferable to protect delicate surfaces.

We can also carefully abrade and smooth the stone using sanding techniques or traditional methods like French drags to achieve a specific texture or finish. After cleaning, the stone can be treated with breathable sealants or lime wash to protect the surface, enhance longevity, and maintain its historic and aesthetic integrity.

Using scaffolding, props, and steel supports, we can carry out repairs on any structural stone element. While natural stone is strong and durable, it can develop cracks or experience movement over time. In many cases, these damaged elements need replacing, although some can be secured using stainless steel pins.

The process involves carefully propping any areas supported by the affected stone, removing the damaged piece, and installing a new one. Where necessary and approved, we may incorporate additional support measures, such as reinforced concrete lintels or stainless steel reinforcement, to ensure structural stability while respecting the integrity of the original stonework.

In some cases, entire walls or façades need to be carefully dismantled and rebuilt, as with projects like the Mercury Gable. In other situations, individual stone replacements are sufficient to restore the structure while preserving as much of the original material as possible.

Where walls or façades are leaning or unstable, we may install discreet anchors to tie the structure into adjacent walls, improving stability while maintaining the historic integrity and appearance of the building. Every repair is carried out with precision, safety, and respect for the original construction.

As the outer layer of a building, stonework is exposed to rain, frost, and other weathering forces, which can cause cracks, displaced stones, or damaged pointing. Water can penetrate these weak points, potentially causing internal damp issues and structural damage.

To address this, we replace cracked or deteriorated stones and carry out precise mortar repairs, carefully matching the original material. We also use flaunching on joints and areas prone to water ingress, ensuring that the stonework is both protected and visually consistent. Our approach preserves the building’s integrity while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.

FAQ's

Stonework should be inspected regularly for signs of damage or deterioration. Common indicators that repair or replacement is needed include visible cracks, delaminated or loose stones, water ingress, spalling, or crumbling mortar joints.

If stone is failing structurally or allowing moisture to penetrate the building, it may need full replacement or specialised repair techniques. At Mendip Stonemasons, we assess each situation carefully, determining the most appropriate method. Whether it’s targeted stone replacement, mortar repair, or structural reinforcement — to preserve the building’s integrity and appearance.

Yes, we specialise in working with heritage and listed buildings across Somerset and the Mendip region. Our team uses traditional stonemasonry techniques and carefully researched materials to preserve the historical integrity of each structure. Whether it’s restoring decorative features, repairing structural stonework, or matching original materials, we ensure that all work is sympathetic to the building’s history while meeting modern standards for durability and safety.

Yes, matching existing stone and mortar is a key part of our work, especially on heritage and listed buildings. We carefully analyse the colour, texture, and composition of the original stone and mortar, then create replacements or repairs that blend seamlessly with the existing material. This ensures that every repair, whether it’s a single stone or an entire section of wall, maintains the building’s character, authenticity, and visual consistency.

The duration of stone repairs depends on the size and complexity of the project. Small repairs, such as replacing individual stones or carrying out mortar repairs, can often be completed in a few days. Larger projects, including full wall or façade restorations, structural repairs, or intricate heritage work, may take several weeks to ensure every element is carefully crafted, accurately matched, and properly installed. At Mendip Stonemasons, we prioritise quality and precision, so timelines are planned to deliver durable, long-lasting results.

Yes, we provide free quotes and site inspections for all types of stonework projects across Somerset and the Mendip region. Visiting your property allows us to assess the condition of the stone, understand the scope of work, and offer a detailed, accurate estimate. Our goal is to give clients clear, transparent information so you can make informed decisions about repairs, restoration, or bespoke masonry work.

Stonework should be inspected and maintained regularly to preserve its appearance and structural integrity. For most properties, a general inspection every 2–5 years is recommended, with more frequent checks for older, heritage, or exposed buildings. Routine maintenance, such as repointing, cleaning, and minor repairs, helps prevent water ingress, frost damage, and deterioration, ensuring the stone remains durable and visually appealing for decades.
